A common deception strategy is to put a honeypot within your environment to expose a large attack surface. The intent is to tempt potential threat actors within your environment, so that they would likely find that honeypot and attack it. The purpose of deception is to help you determine, one, if there is a threat within your environment, and two, what their goals are.
